Warming Up to Southeast Michigan

“I’m allergic to life guarding,” I said to my mother at the end of last summer, as I lay sprawled across my couch in uniform, once again wishing that I’d found someplace else to work.

Mom, not really buying my dramatics, simply said, “Well, as long as you’re not allergic to finding a different job next summer, then it’s really not a problem.”

By the time February rolled around, I started to get nervous about my job prospects, and went about applying for various internships. Eventually I found a program through the University of Michigan’s Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP for short) that places students in community-based research positions with 23 different nonprofits in the Detroit area.

I applied for a research fellowship because I’m a nerd. I applied for this particular research fellowship with the Michigan Suburbs Alliance because I really care about the region.
